Slot Car Racing
"You can`t beat the competition of racing three others and the must to get your car back on the track after a spin off !! " ( even if it`s backwards ), The beer & the barbie helps as well, of course !!!
I`ve a layout of approx. 4.5m by 1.9m with four lanes. (see track plans). Im not so good at scenery but the basic`s are there. Ive even included two pit garage`s, a couple of grandstand`s and a control tower. Its assembled and dis-mantled each time, bit of a pain but hours of entertainment. We have races consisting of Endurance, Formula 1, Focus WRC and anything that moves.
We have a result table for a laugh, unless I lose then I forget to enter the data, "only joking". The results are updated on the race day, and recorded until the next race meeting. I mount the track in the garden in a gazebo 6m X 3m depending on the weather, on MDF boards which rest on a metal frame structure, approx 780mm high, the structure measures approx. 4.2 m by 1.7 m. Handy to tie the gazebo too in the wind !!
I`ve made up a gantry which indicates a start sequence, last lap and the winner, the gantry provides the run down through red indicators to green, to start the race, then flashes on last lap, and remains on to indicate winner and second place. The information is collected via micro switches mounted in the track. This is backed up by lap counters, etc. Power to the tracks are supplied using two 12 volt transformers, old style. The track is a mixture of Scalextric classic and sport , using the old types of borders & barriers along with the new.
The race normally commences with a period of warm up laps then on to the racing, this consists of twenty laps giving the winner ten points and second five points. Generally four heats are completed, ( depending on the amount entered and time) giving eight semi finalists. The first and second of each group then go into the final taking there points which are added to there first round points. We then get our winner with a possible thirty points, and runner up and so on.
The same system is done for each class, giving winners of each class and a total points winner.
Racing starts again this summer, "come on the sun"..............
